Typhoon Mawa, the second typhoon in 2023, approaches Okinawa, Japan
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on June 1 that Typhoon Mawa, the second typhoon of the year, is moving north-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour over the south-southeast sea of Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, and is expected to approach the main island of Okinawa on the morning of June 2.
As a result, more than 300 flights including All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines from Okinawa airports were suspended on January 1, and about 200 passenger ships connecting major islands in Okinawa were suspended. Public transportation on the main island of Okinawa was suspended, some supermarkets and shopping centers were temporarily closed, government offices were suspended and schools were temporarily closed.
Japan's Meteorological Agency urged local residents to be on alert for floods and landslides caused by strong winds and torrential rain, and urged the elderly to take shelter in advance. As of 9 a.m. on Monday, more than 60 shelters had been set up in Okinawa.
